Project Overview: Retro Bites
Arcade-inspired website that balances playful aesthetics with UX and accessibility standards
Retro Bites was designed for a Townsquare Interactive client who wanted a bold, nostalgic theme packed with special effects—think gradients, animations, and neon-inspired visuals. The challenge was to deliver a site that felt immersive and fun without overwhelming the user or compromising usability.
My goal was to strike a balance between visual excitement and functional clarity. I used a modular layout and intuitive navigation to guide users through the experience, while carefully managing contrast, motion, and color choices to meet WCAG accessibility standards. Despite the heavy use of gradients and layered effects, every component was tested for readability, keyboard navigation, and screen reader compatibility.
I built the site using a custom Duda CMS framework, writing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create bespoke interactions and visual effects. This approach allowed for precise control over accessibility features and performance optimization. The final product delivered a high-impact aesthetic while maintaining a clean, inclusive interface—proving that themed design can still be user-friendly and standards-compliant.
What I Learned
Designing Retro Bites taught me how to balance creative expression with usability and accessibility. I learned how to implement WCAG-compliant design within a highly stylized theme, using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to fine-tune interactions and visual effects. Working within Duda’s CMS pushed me to think strategically about structure, performance, and user flow—proving that bold design can still be inclusive and intuitive.
